Good morning, afternoon and night, no matter where in the world you’re viewing from, I’m sure you will be interested in this article. For this article, I wanted to include some new people, who have boarded “The Voyage.” Basically I wanted to invite other international students around the world to speak about their experiences studying another language, and talk about why they did it, why they went to, or are going to a different country, and invite them to speak of the difficulties and rewards of learning a new language. This will be a multi-part series, the amount of students who want to share is quite numerous!
So, today, me, and 5 other students will share our testimonials learning a foreign language, or two, or three. Some of them can even speak four and five! We’re not bragging about our language skills, what we are trying to do, is to bridge a gap through cultures, in our own way. Not through other companies, or through other programs; in our way, we will bridge that gap. We are a part of the this new generation, this new trend, new nations. And we want to bridge our gap, our way. So…me first haha.
My name is Daniel Cooper; Chinese name is Dannier, Korean name is Kim Minjun, and I’m still working on a Japanese name haha. I am a college student at The Lincoln University. I started learning Chinese for two main reasons:
I loved Chinese video games, and two, I loved Chinese kung fu movies. Everyone knows, the best Kung fu movie experience is when you watch it authentically, in Chinese language, with no subtitles haha. I personally loved speaking Chinese, to me, it was an outlet for many things. And i seemed to speak it pretty we’ll according to native speakers. After I attended college, I found that we had no Chinese language program, so I annoyed my school to bring it back, because, I’m special like that right? (Kidding)
And from doing this, I found some confidence in myself.
Confidence in being able to do something unique, confidence to stand out in a crowd, confidence to be a leader, I took charge of this Chinese program. I sang at events, been a master of ceremony for other events, and even went to China a few times.
Recently, I’ve been increasing my Korean language abilities, so that I can go to Korea for my masters degree. I find Korean easy to write, but difficult to speak, but it is such a fun language to speak. The reactions and responses I get from people, by speaking their language, makes all the hours of watching videos worth it. It only takes the praise from one person, to keep us international students going. My last major reason, why I love learning languages is because of the life long friends you make. It’s a small world, really, and the friends which seem countries away, become very close. It was thanks to the meeting many Chinese people in New York, my hometown that I started learning Chinese, and it was thanks to my Korean friends in China, who have made me want to learn Korean as well. We’re doing this thing man.
Hello my name is Kang Nahyun from South Korea. I just got into university this year so I’m a freshman now. When i was young , to be honest, i hated learning English because i didnt like memorizing all the vocabulary and i didnt know the exact purpose of learning it. I just studied it to get better grade on tests. But then I went to study abroad to Canada when i was a middle school student and there, I experienced “live English” directly not textbook English. It was quite hard to communicate with others and to do assignments in English at first, but I got used to it. So now, when I went back to Korea I enjoy learning english because now I know, I can be friends with many other various people and my mindset is also bigger and bigger thanks to English. It helps me to be an international person which can help my competitiveness in the future. I am sure that English will be the key to my success 🙂
Hello, my name is Changgyoon Rhim, my English name is Lin, so call me Lin haha.
I learned English mostly when I lived in Canada for about 2 years. Before that I could speak a little however living in Canada helped me a lot. Of course it was tough for me at first. I had to spend twice as much time and effort for schoolwork and there were lots of misunderstandings and miscommunications. Fortunately, I think I feel comfortable speaking and expressing myself in English. In my opinion learning a language isnt just about language but learning the culture beneath it. While in army I was a translator and I also enjoyed speaking English. It broadens your experience and opportunities. And a lot of my friends struggle to learn English but I don’t so I can do more stuff that I really want to!

Yusuke Tanahashi
Hello everyone, my name is Yusuke Tanahashi
Studying Chinese is relatively simple for Japanese people, that is because many of our Japanese characters are similar to Chinese characters. So we can recognize the Chinese character easily. However it is also difficult, that is because many Japanese character is the same as Chinese characters but the meaning is completely different. Also, Chinese is a language with tones, while Japanese language does not have tones, so this is another big difference. When I would pronounce a Chinese word, it would become a big mess, because my tone is weird, in Japan I would say the word and it would be fine, but in Chinese if I say the word with wrong tone, it would be wrong. I feel that most international students also have this problem.
When I went to China, I attended East China Normal University in Shanghai. In fact, it is a very beautiful campus! At first, I was very nervous, that is because I have no friends or family here, but I know that I want to learn Chinese. When I started classes, I noticed that my class had more then 32 students! Many were from Japan like me, many from Korea, and even students from the West! Our Chinese levels were similar so we were put into the same classes and because of this, it was comfortable. I knew that speaking and learning Chinese together with them would not be hard because we each help each other and study together!
Hello, my name is Rino Fujii
I began learning Chinese in college, but why? People always ask how come I wanna learn Chinese. So the reason is China’s economic growth is very fast, and there are many opportunities for people who speak Chinese!
It was my junior year of college when I had the opportunity to go to Shanghai in China! I learned a lot, and met many international students, we used Chinese all the time, to talk about our views, countries and everything.
This was a big opportunity for me, and the other students left a deep impression on me. I traveled to many places in China, and I learned that the pronunciation is not the same everywhere. For example, some people spoke Mandarin, but in different tones, or voices. Overall, I loved my experiences!
Hello, my name is Bryle, I was born in the Philippines and came to the United States in 2002.
Coming to America gave me an opportunity to learn a new language. Since we immigrated here, it was obvious that I needed to learn English. To be honest I don’t remember having major trouble with learning the language. At first, I remember having some difficulty getting my point across, but got better along the way. I was placed in an ESL (English as a Second Language) class with a Spanish-speaking teacher. Although he taught me how to speak and write in English properly, I was also learning some Spanish as well. I feel like being around people who mostly speak a certain language is the key to fully speaking that language. Hence, visiting a country that speaks that language may be the best way to learn!!!
Yes, learning a new language is hard, without a doubt! But, when you experience that first moment, when you can speak with a local, in a different country, in their native tongue, it is an indescribable feeling of accomplishment. Learning a language broadens your thinking without a doubt, you see a different world through language, you experience a different culture, before you even leave your country, your thinking becomes different, you will even dream differently. (My first time dreaming in Chinese, what a trip!)
